[ action, July 30th ]
And he looks her right in the eye.]
It's a long way down, Rogue.
[ action, July 30th ]
For a moment, her pull against him goes slack. Even if he uses this chance to get a better grip on her, she won't fight him.
She just stares at him in something very much like horror.
Then:]
Let go.
[ action, July 30th ]
Slowly, he lets her go, watching cautiously for her next move.]
[ action, July 30th ]
Oh.]
Hell.
[Her voice is very quiet.
While she had no real problem hurting him if it came down to it, at least when they were enemies, but she hadn't wanted to kill him.
She braces her hands against the doorframe and feels sick.]
[ action, July 30th ]
Trying to reassure her with something like "at least it turned me right back around" won't help, but he still feels like he should do something. His voice is low when he speaks up.]
No way of tellin' where this t'ing is gonna end up.
[ action, July 30th ]
And then he went and tried to make her feel better after that, not even allowing her to decide whether or not she wanted to apologize.
Of course. Because it was just expected that she'd screw up.
Monster.
Silent, she reached out to close the door.]
[ action, July 30th ]
Rogue...
[ action, July 30th ]
[She turned away from the door and walked towards a corner of the closet, sinking down into it.]
Just don't.
[ action, July 30th ]
If you say so.
[ action, July 30th ]
She lifts her face, and it's easy to find his eyes. They're glowing in the darkness, after all. And she stares right at them, defiantly bare of her defenses, and doesn't look away.]
I was mad at you. I'm still mad at you. But I had no call ta be that careless, an' for that, I apologize.
[ action, July 30th ]
He's silent for a moment after that before he answers softly.]
Can't really blame you for still bein' mad.
[If she wants to talk about it, then it would probably be for the best, although he isn't too keen on the idea either. But if she'd rather leave it alone, he'll leave it at that.]
[ action, July 30th ]
Can't really blame her. Ha.
There was a long, long stretch of silence before she couldn't take it anymore.]
Do you have any idea what you did ta me? What kind of a game was this for ya, that you had to mess with me?
[She muttered a curse.
I trusted you.]
[ action, July 30th ]
Especially considering that it's... well... her. He knows how much her mutation weighs on her, and he definitely didn't help anything with this whole mess. With a shake of the head, he tries to catch her eye again. Being open and honest isn't something he's particularly good at, but he wants to make sure he has eye contact if he can. The truth tends to shine through.]
It wasn't a game, Rogue. I know it's not any kinda excuse, but it's the truth.
[Not that he really thinks she's going to believe him, which is a frustrating thought. But he walked himself right into it. He runs a hand through his hair absently.]
I shoulda told you.
[ action, July 30th ]
And then she'd seen him in love with someone else. Promised to someone else. Someone beautiful and competent. Someone she could never compete with, because she was someone he could touch.
And so what else could it be but a game?
Despite her best intentions, Rogue's gaze slid to his after his denial. There. He said it again. The truth.
You've got so many lies twisted up inside of you, Remy LeBeau, how would you even know? No wonder you're convincing.
But it was when he confessed that he should have told her that she scoffed, raising a hand in exasperation.]
Told me what? Ya think just lettin' me know you're engaged would make datin' you okay? Gawd.
[She might be a monster, but she's not that kind of monster.
She might be untouchable, but even she wanted something real.]
[ action, July 30th ]
[Not that it would've made it okay, but she at least deserved to know. Although really, in the end, it probably wouldn't have helped anything at all. He'd still be the womanizer for being attracted to her, and she'd still be angry with him and shutting him out.
LeBeau, why do you do this. You're only hurting everyone involved.
He's silent for a moment, mulling over what to say. Getting into the details means digging up all kinds of things he'd prefer to forget, but. He's already gotten into it. He wanted a chance to explain before, and now, here it is.]
I don't even know if the engagement's still on. [Although that probably won't help much, but there it is.] Sure didn't seem like it last I was in town.
[ action, July 30th ]
She exhaled in disgust, swallowing down the urge to rip into him, saying just that. And doing that, no matter how he deserved it, would just show him how much she was still hurting and probably slide right off that snake's skin of his.]
Sure seems ta me like that's something you'd know for certain, 'fore you hold it up as any kind of excuse.
[ action, July 30th ]
Didn't get much chance to find out 'fore I ended up here. But they way they were shootin' at us don't exactly make me t'ink the chances are too good that the arrangement's still on.
[ action, July 30th ]
...what are you talkin' about?
[ action, July 30th ]
The whole t'ing was s'posed to stop the fightin' between those Ripper fools an' the T'ieves Guild. [And that was pretty much the only reason he'd agreed to it.] Dunno 'bout you, but it didn't look to me like they were gearin' up to play nice.
[ action, July 30th ]
You're goin' ta sit there an' tell me that after all that, what you had goin' on with that girl was an arranged marriage?
[ action, July 30th ]
[Remy suspects Jean-Luc had more grandiose plans than he'd ever let on, since it would mean getting an elbow in on assassin territory. Whatever the plan had been, he was beginning to suspect he'd never find out. Although to be fair, he's not sure he wants to know. Being used by Jean-Luc was hardly new for Remy, but dragging Belladonna into it too? Not wanting to marry her aside, the girl was a close friend and that sort of thing stung.
As he goes on, his eyes glow a little brighter as his tone hollows.]
I bought into it all, t'inkin' it'd solve everythin'.
[ Action, July 30th ]
Unless, of course, he'd honestly believed they wouldn't come for her, that they'd think she'd run away. And she couldn't blame him if he had. That had been a dark time.
But this was just too pat.]
Yeah, it looked like you were really sufferin'.
[Pause a beat.]
Just when was this "arrangement" supposed ta take place?
[Were you engaged before or after you kidnapped her?]
[ Action, July 30th ]
And yeah, that grave just keeps getting deeper... He knows how this will sound, and. Well, honestly, it is what it is. It'll sound like exactly what it was: a tremendous trainwreck of a situation.]
Originally? Before I left town. [Before Magneto. Before getting tangled up with the X-Men. Before the kidnapping incident and anything else.]
T'ings were fallin' apart when I left. Didn't get much chance to find out how much 'fore wakin' up here.
[And a major part of that was not stopping to look back until he went to New Orleans with Rogue, which. Also looks horrible, probably.]
[ Action, July 30th ]
[She said it softly, but she hadn't meant to say it out loud at all. He'd been engaged the whole time.
The whole. time.
From the moment he handed her the card that blew up in her face to the moment that he handed her a card that she kept as a mark of - something - he'd been engaged.]
Son of a--
[But trying to expand her view beyond herself, he'd - he'd what, he'd gotten engaged and run?
She wanted to shut down, but she'd come this far, so she lifts her gaze to his and asks with blatant incredulity.]
What the hell?
[ Action, July 30th ]
Never said I was proud of it. [Lord, is that putting it lightly.] It was leave town or give Julien a chance at carvin' me up. He never was keen on the weddin' idea, but he got worse about it over time.
[After Henri was hurt, there was no telling how much worse it would have gotten if he'd stayed. He didn't much care to find out. Julien was completely unhinged. The upper limits of what the man might do were probably much higher than anyone would realize.
Hell, she'd zapped him once. She probably knows full well just how crazy that guy was.]
'Fore I left, he an' Marius were callin' for my head. Judgin' by how they were when I went back, that didn't change much. Maybe I shouldn't be jumpin' to conclusions, but that contract ain't gonna work if they kill me first.
[And there's the heart of his logic. She'll probably still be angry, still be hurt, but this whole time wasn't meant to do any of that.]
