"Family"
Father: Jean-Luc LeBeau
Older Brother: Henri LeBeau
Sister-in-law: Mercy LeBeau
"Aunt": Mattie Baptiste*
Cousins: Etienne Marceaux (deceased)**, Theoren Marceaux, Emil Lapin
* Note: Mattie isn't related by blood at all, but she was responsible for most of the job of raising Henri and Remy and their cousins. The lack of blood relation doesn't stop either of them from calling her Tante Mattie.
** Note: Etienne is a very, very sore spot. Remy loved him dearly, and this is why he will probably never, ever bring him up.
Family listed mainly because he may make some offhand references to them, or let in closer CR on some finer details. Tante Mattie is pretty dear to him, so she'll probably pop up most often.
Childhood
- Gambit was raised by Jean-Luc LeBeau, less adopted into the crime family than he was kidnapped into it. His eyes matched a prophecy about the child who was supposed to end the warring between the Thieves and Assassins Guilds. It's no small wonder he was a master pickpocket by age five.
- His best friend growing up was the granddaughter of the head of the Assassins Guild, Bella Donna. She's always been bossy, but they always got along well. He treats her like something of a sister now, although they went through a flirty phase when they were younger.
- Etienne Marceaux, one of Remy's cousins by adoption, was another of his very best friends as a child. The boy was killed as a direct result of his initiation into the Thieves Guild, when Remy was supposed to be sponsoring him. Remy hasn't ever forgiven himself.
- His schooling was mainly on the streets of New Orleans and from members of the Guild. Gambit may not be the most book smart, but he's still very quick-witted and good at surviving.
- Tante Mattie was responsible for Remy's skill and passion for cooking. She only smacked him with a wooden spoon so many times for stealing food before it was finished before she recruited him into helping. He took to it like a duck to water and now it's become a hobby of his. Unfortunately for anyone cooking with him, he's absorbed a lot of Tante Mattie's kitchen pushiness into his own cooking manner. The good news is, the food is usually tasty enough to make up for what a bossy jerk he can be in the kitchen.
- Around his eighteenth birthday, Gambit's powers went completely out of control. After several accidental explosions and several months, he went seeking help, and ended up finding it with Mr. Sinister. His power levels were adjusted to a manageable state, but it racked up a huge debt to Sinister. The debt hasn't been called in on him yet, except for a few odd jobs that Gambit is most definitely not proud of taking on.
Personal Life
- He and Bella Donna have been in an arranged engagement for several years. It was intended to stop the fighting between the Guilds. Remy basically called it off after one of the Assassins tried to take out his foster brother a few nights before they were arranged to be married, and he realized that the fighting was definitely never going to stop. It was around this time he skipped town and joined Magneto's Acolytes. To say Bella is furious is to put it extremely lightly. Gambit still loves her as his best friend, but she is beyond livid with him. Friendship destroyed.
- Not that Remy is aware of it as of when he arrived in Luceti, but the above engagement has since been called off by the Thieves and Assassins guilds. He hasn't been told about much of anything that happened between when he left and when he came back.
- Despite some grudging loyalty to those who raised him, Remy really isn't very fond of Jean-Luc. There are times he wishes he could just sever all ties with him and leave once and for all, but the Guild keeps finding ways to pull him back in. He hates that they seem to only want his powers and not actually him, but he still can't ever bring himself to let them get themselves killed/kidnapped/whatever.
- Even though he isn't very fond of Jean-Luc, Remy has always been fairly close with his brother Henri. There's always been a good amount of teasing between them, though, especially when it comes to Henri's wife, Mercy. (Who also teases the hell out of Remy.)
- Remy is still terribly attached to Tante Mattie. Probably nothing will ever change this.
Magneto
- (Sort of expanding on the above with Belladonna...) The engagement blowoff fiasco was what kicked off the series of events that led to Remy leaving New Orleans. A few nights before the marriage date was set, Remy and his older brother Henri were out on the town and ended up running into Julien, Bella's older brother, as well as a couple Assassin/Ripper lackeys. Julien was spoiling for a fight, which neither LeBeau was moving to start, up until Julien pulled out a knife. Henri was the first to move into action, shoving past a furious but bewildered Remy, and was stabbed. Assassin precision was slightly off since the blow was meant for Remy, who launched into the fight with a fury that matched his nickname of le diable blanc. When the other Assassins pulled Julien away, and some Thieves Guild members arrived who were quick enough to figure out what was going on, the situation got even uglier despite the fight being broken up.
Henri was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. Julien was also brought in, not in quite so terrible shape, but Remy had been sure to put his opponent out of commission. Marius, head of the Assassins, sided with his son and guild members, demanding Remy be brought to justice for the attack. (Which, in Guild terms, is a fancy way of asking for his head.) Jean-Luc sided with his sons. Guilds on both sides, furious with the attacks, began crying out for war.
Trying to reason with Jean-Luc only frustrated Remy further. He had only agreed to the engagement to stop the fighting between the Guilds and he could see even a peace treaty looming directly on the horizon wasn't stopping it. Jean-Luc, too focused on revenge against the Assassins, wouldn't back down from his point of view. Remy argued for a while, growing more and more irritated, before finally snapping that he was through with it all and stormed out.
He didn't bother to gather up much more than his coat, a wallet that may or may not have been his, a pack of cards, and the keys to his motorcycle. He wasn't too far outside of New Orleans before he was approached at a stop by Magneto, who held the promise of being able to vanish off both Guilds' radar without a trace. Too furious over the night's events to think over it much past a promise of safety from Assassin hunters on his tail, Remy agreed, and never looked back until the events of "Cajun Spice."
- Remy (and, to be fair, Pyro) were the major pains in Magneto's tail out of the Acolyte group. It was nice having a partner in crime, although Remy still wasn't loyal enough in the end to, as Pyro put it, "leave a note" when he left.
- If Remy was loyal to anyone out of the Acolytes, it was Colossus, who he always figured was a better match for the X-Men. Piotr was a good guy, and if there had been any way to help him get his family back without alerting Magneto, he would have gladly thrown in with him. They may not have been the closest, but Remy always respected Piotr.
- There was very little love lost between Remy and Magneto. Yes, he did the jobs asked of him, but never any more than what the boss asked for specifically. Remy never was too good at the respect and obey thing. He did just enough to keep Magneto from throwing him to the wolves, but neither one was too terribly fond of the other.
- Remy never could stand Sabertooth. The sentiment was mutual.
